Unfortunately, Sal's rips release calamitrons, which can lead to the universe's destruction. Sal can make rips in the universe that allow him to transport things from parallel universes, including a raw chicken and Sal's Mami Muerta. The truth, it turns out, is even stranger than she could have imagined. Then, all evidence of the chicken inexplicably disappears, causing intrepid reporter/Yasmany's lawyer/student council president Gabi to search for the truth. For payback, Sal somehow put a raw chicken in Yasmany's locked locker with a crowd of students watching. His most recent visit is because of an incident with bully Yasmany, who knocks Sal's diabetes kit from his hand after Sal tried to help Yasmany with his locker. In SAL AND GABI BREAK THE UNIVERSE, 13-year-old Sal has been to the principal's office three times and it's only the first week of school. There's mild play-fighting and some mention of blood. After a day of not eating, Sal, who has diabetes, passes out and ends up in the hospital for an overnight stay. While many characters think Gabi and Sal would make a cute couple, neither are interested in more than friendship. Gabi's newborn brother Iggy fights for his life in the hospital, and there are moments when readers will worry whether little Iggy will make it. Sal, still grieving his mother's death, intentionally and unintentionally brings his Mami Muerta from other universes. Sal and Gabi's universe-breaking adventure is filled with lots of laughs thanks to Sal's sarcasm and wit, but their journey is not without some tears.
